Barbara Martens-Ducan, General Manager/CAM of The Breakers in Fort Walton Beach, Florida was kind enough to answer a few questions for us recently about how she got started with vacation rentals and what she loves about the industry.
Tell us a bit about yourself.
I am a native to this area and live in Fort Walton Beach. After graduating from Fort Walton Beach High School, I moved to Atlanta in the automobile finance industry with Toyota. After 12 years I moved back to the panhandle and began my career in 1994 in the Rental and Association Management. Many of my family members were involved in designing, developing, selling and managing many resorts in the panhandle, so it was a natural fit for me to join forces.
Why did you choose a career in vacation property rental management?
I chose this career field as I have spent my adult life providing customer service. Being in this business allows me to help people “make memories” during their vacation, and what more beautiful area than the panhandle of Florida to do this. Growing up here, I know this area so it is more of sharing than selling. Over my 25 years in this business, I have managed properties from 30A, Sandestin, to Destin and now Fort Walton Beach.
What do you love most about your job? What motivates you to come to work every day?
What I like most about my job is working to help draw people to our area, provide them with not just a condominium on the gulf to stay in, but also share the wonderful amenities our area has to offer. Even if it’s been a tough day at the office, knowing we helped someone or their family have a wonderful getaway makes it worth going to work each day.
